How To Choose A 55+ Community That Won't Make You Feel 55+

Posted on

When it comes time to retire, you have a few options of where you want to live: you can stay put, you can relocate to a different state, or you can move into a 55 and over community. One of the reasons why people tend to avoid 55+ communities is for the mere fact that there's a lot of stigma attached to them. What if you could find one of these communities that didn't make you feel like you were over 55? Then would it be something that you'd want to invest in?

Find a Spot That You Own

You can find a lot of rental properties in these 55 and older communities, but by buying a home for sale in one of these communities, you may actually feel more at home. Why? Because ownership says a lot. When you own something, you are more likely to take pride in it and you are more likely to feel freedom. For instance, when you own a house you can do just about anything to the inside that you want without any repercussions at all. Having that kind of freedom as a homeowner will make you feel like you are young and less restricted.

Choose An Active Community

If you drive through a 55 and older community and notice that just about nobody is outside and the people that are can barely move, then you may want to look elsewhere. Try looking for an active community. Being surrounded by people who have a lot of energy and a zest for life is a great way for you to continue to feel young and to stay active. One of the things that you may want to look for in a community is one that has a lot of outdoor amenities like walking trails, a swimming pool, a pickleball court, a tennis court, and a gym with community classes. The more options you will have of things to do, the better you are likely to feel.

Find Friends

Whether you move into a community with a group of existing friends or you find a community and build friends there, having close relationships with you is another great way to help you feel young for longer. When you are surrounded by people whom you have a lot in common with, it's going to make you feel energized and motivated to get up and get moving every morning.
